2025 ACM-SIGACT Distinguished Service Award
Tracy Kimbrel

Tracy Kimbrel is recognized for his extraordinary and sustained service to the theoretical computer science community during his 15 years at the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF). As Program Director for the Algorithmic Foundations (AF) program he initiated a new level of planning efforts (such as meetings and visioning workshops) around important research directions in TCS. These led to creation of several major cross-cutting funding initiatives that advanced algorithmic science. He spearheaded the development of influential programs including TRIPODS (Transdisciplinary Research in Principles of Data Science), Algorithms in the Field (AitF), and the Interface between Computer Science and Economics (ICES), each of which significantly expanded the reach and impact of theoretical computer science. His efforts not only strengthened connections between TCS and other scientific disciplines but also helped build institutional structures that continue to support collaborative, interdisciplinary research.

Beyond his official duties, Tracy was known for his deep commitment to the community, mentoring junior researchers, supporting early-career faculty, and guiding rotators and program officers at NSF. His leadership was marked by fairness, transparency, and a steadfast dedication to the intellectual vitality of the field. His service has left a lasting legacy on the structure, inclusiveness, and visibility of TCS research within the broader computing landscape.
